Bigger Household, Same Pipes: Water Pressure in Multi-Generation Homes
More people in the same house means more taps running at once. Here is how to tell whether a booster pump helps, and how to size one for a bigger household.
Many Malaysian homes now hold more people than they were built for. Grandparents move in, adult children stay on, a sibling's family joins for a few years. The house is the same, the pipes are the same, but the morning routine is not. Three bathrooms in use at once, a washer running before work and the kitchen busy with breakfast can push a water system past what it handled comfortably before. Here is how to tell whether a booster pump is the right answer, and how to size one for a bigger household.
Why a bigger household feels the pressure
More taps running at the same time
Total daily water use matters less than how much is drawn at the same moment. A family of four may shower one after another; a household of eight often cannot wait. When two or more taps run together and pressure drops noticeably, the system is struggling with simultaneous demand.
Upstairs bathrooms suffer first
In a double or triple-storey house, the top floor is furthest from the supply and, in tank-fed homes, closest in height to the tank. A weak upstairs shower is often the first complaint, especially when the master bathroom and a ground-floor bathroom are in use together.
Uneven flow through the day
Peaks become sharper. Pressure may be fine at midday and poor at 7am and 9pm, when everyone needs water. Uneven flow through the day is one of the signs a booster pump can help.

Signs it is time to look at a booster pump
Household symptoms worth noting
Keep a simple list for a week: which showers are weak and when, whether the washer fills slowly, whether pressure drops when the kitchen tap is opened, and whether upper floors have very low pressure. If flow has suddenly become weaker than before, mention that too, because it can point to an ageing pump rather than the household's size.
Comfort for older family members
Weak, fluctuating flow is more than an annoyance for elderly family members, who may need a steady shower, or for anyone caring for young children at bath time. Firmer, more even pressure makes daily routines easier for everyone in the house.
When the problem is not the pump
If only one tap is weak while the rest are fine, the cause may be a blocked aerator, a narrow pipe or a partly closed valve rather than the system pressure. Photos and a short video help us tell the difference before recommending anything.
Sizing for a multi-generation home
Start with the busiest moment
When you message us, describe the busiest moment of the day: how many showers, how many other taps, the washer and anything else that draws water at the same time. Add the property type and the number of floors. This is what guides the HP rating we recommend, not the number of residents alone.
Packages for landed and terrace homes
Tsunami is stated for landed and terrace homes with everyday household demand: RM1,800 for 0.50HP, RM2,000 for 0.75HP and RM2,200 for 1.00HP, supplied and installed. Grundfos is the premium brand option at RM3,600 (0.50HP), RM3,800 (0.75HP) and RM4,000 (1.00HP). Every package includes the pump unit, professional installation, basic wiring and pressure and function testing. Both ranges are on our booster pump packages page.
What can add to the price
A larger household sometimes comes with a renovated house: an added bathroom, a re-routed pipe or a new water heater. Pipe modification, extra electrical wiring and taking out the existing pump are quoted separately after photos. Price depends on property type, pump size, existing piping and access.
Already bought a pump?
Installation of a pump you already own is RM800 per installation, covering the installation, basic wiring, test run and commissioning.
Common home types we hear about
Older double-storey terraces
Family homes in established neighbourhoods such as Ipoh and Bukit Mertajam are often double-storey terraces that have been extended over the years, with more bathrooms than the original plumbing was planned for.
Larger semi-detached and bungalow homes
Bigger houses around Kuala Lumpur can have long pipe runs to the furthest bathroom. Here the position of the pump and the layout of the piping matter as much as the HP rating, so a clear photo of the tank and pipe area is especially useful.
Getting a recommendation
What to send
Send your property type, floor count, the number of taps used at once at the busiest time, and photos of the pump spot and existing piping. We will recommend an HP rating and a package price, then arrange installation, wiring and a pressure test.
